Care and Maintenance is essential to preserving and prolonging the life of John Boos Cutting Boards and Butcher Blocks, or any unsealed wooden item in your kitchen (bowls, utensils and more). This set has all you need for easy and simple care, with one 16 ounce bottle of Mystery Oil and one 5 ounce Tube of Board Cream. Oil or creme? Use both! John Boos highly recommends using the Boos Block Mystery Oil first and then using the Board Cream to fully replenish, restore, and protect your wood surfaces. Instructions: 1.A minimum of once a month (depending upon the use and household conditions), apply an even coat of Boos Mystery oil to all surfaces of your wood cutting board using your fingers 2. Allow the Mystery oil to fully penetrate through the wood fibers overnight, then wipe off any excess oil. 3. Apply additional oil to any visible dry spots or for any other necessary reasons and repeat. Do not over oil your cutting board. 4. For additional protection, it is recommended to use Boos Block Board Cream (sold separately on Amazon) to seal the top of the wood surface. Allow the board cream to penetrate the wood surface overnight, then wipe off any excess cream.

Easy to use and should last a long time and preserve the board.

I used the oil to clean the board when it arrived. Lots of dust and unidentifiable debris came up on the cleaning cloth, so I scrubbed generously until the board came clean. I applied the oil according to directions from Boos, left it overnight to soak in and now the board is clean and hopefully well protected. Maple is very hard wood and the board should now be watertight and easy to clean between uses. Directions are to use the oil once a month.

Fantastic products

There’s no better way to protect my Boos cutting board than with these products. This keeps the board looking fresh, clean, moist and new all the time. I love the applicator which makes it so easy to apply. I’d highly recommend this to anyone owning a high end cutting board.

Great product that really nourishes and protects the wood. I also use it as lubricant for my sharpening stone as it’s food safe.

Works great!

Keeps my cutting boards looking great. I apply monthly since my boards are used daily. Depending on how much use and how the board looks, I may use one product or the other and sometimes both products. I feel like using hot water for cleaning the boards tends to remove the product over time. It does require a bit of time to let the product soak in.

worth it at least once

Is Mystery Oil really that much better than standard food grade mineral oil that's 80% cheaper? Almost certainly not. In fact I don't know that the composition is any different (it's not listed of course). Boos blocks don't come from some magical forest and require unicorn blood for proper maintenance. Naturally they'll recommend their own product, which pads the bottom line. See also: printers and ink cartridges ... Knowing that, I bought it anyway, along with the board cream. I reasoned that as much as I spent on my Boos block, and in consideration of reported issues with splitting and/or warping, I might as well try it as insurance if nothing else, to show that I explicitly followed maintenance instructions in case something does go awry. FWIW, a little goes a long way and this bottle looks like it'll last a long time. After that, I'll likely switch to generic food grade oil, but I think it's worth it once at least.

I have been using these products for at least a year. This purchase was just restocking.

Disappointed

Despite using these products a number of times the board is still very dry. In fact the board itself has warped after only a few uses.
